Get Involved at the Beginning

Since moving onto the property in January 2018, we have been hard at work developing infrastructure and access to the entire site. We have been gathering materials and preparing ground for the busy years ahead. On this one-year anniversary of Basalt Blossom we are excited to share our mission with others. We are beginning the process of inviting guests and collaborators to Basalt Blossom.

Work stays

A work stay is a 1-2 week enrichment experience living on the property and working with us on the myriad projects underway. Each work-stay participates in 5 hours of work per day (30 minute check-in 4 hours of work and 30 minute cleanup) usually 8:30am-1:30pm 5 days per 7 day week (work days do not necessarily need to be Monday-Friday). Spring, Summer and Fall accommodations are located in the woods and consist of rustic cabins or tent-camping opportunities. Winter stays are in our heated and plumbed Aframe cabin. We offer a stipend for groceries.

Discovery stays

A discovery stay could be defined as a “pause” from one’s familiar environment and culture to gain a better sense of one’s next step in life. Lasting 1-3 months, the emphasis of this experience is personalizing your work on skills and projects that matter to you. Each discovery stay participates in 20-25 hours of work per week with the choice of working independently or in community. If in community, work is 5 hours of per day (30 minute check-in 4 hours of work and 30 minute cleanup usually 8:30am-1:30pm 5 days per 7 day week (work days do not necessarily need to be Monday-Friday). Spring, Summer and Fall accommodations are located in the woods and consist of rustic cabins or tent-camping opportunities. Winter stays are in our heated and plumbed Aframe cabin. We offer a stipend for groceries.

Collaborations

Collaborations are just what they sound like. We are looking for long-term folks to join Basalt Blossom in mutually living out the mission. If you have a passion for mission and are looking for ways to bring life to that mission, please contact us.

Specific Projects

Guest Bath

  • Alternative Energy: As an off-grid property we have a steady stream of solar and hydro projects underway at any time.
  • Soil Development: Innovation to add macro and micronutrients to the growing areas.
  • Forest Farming: Working with almost 20 acres to establish forest-based farming practices.
  • Irrigation and Pond works: This area gets about 20 inches of rain per year so effective water management and storage are essential.
  • Aquaponics: Raising fish and utilizing the bi-product of that process to support the overall health of the soil.
  • Construction: We have multiple construction projects underway from rustic cabins to barns to fencing to caregiving units. There are opportunities for any skill set.
  • Animals: Currently supporting a small group of animals. We are exploring best practices for raising animals on this farm.
  • Trail Development: We are striving to create disabled access trails throughout the property so that people of all abilities can enjoy the beauty here.
  • Ecological Riparian Restoration: The property supports 1500ft of stream and we are working with the conservation district to improve water quality and fish habitat in these streams.
  • Forest understory management: We are supporting forest fire management by creating a healthier forest here, clearing dead or dense understory. We are excited for the long-term benefits of a healthy forest.
